Lord Hill of Oareford CBE is a former European Commissioner and was Leader of the House of Lords. Lord Hill began his political career in the 1980s working as a special adviser to Kenneth Clarke in three government departments. He later worked in Downing Street from 1991-1994, first in the No 10 Policy Unit and then as Political Secretary to Prime Minister John Major. Having built up and sold Quiller Consultants, a strategic communications consultancy, Hill returned to politics in 2010, when he was appointed Minister for Schools by David Cameron. He became Leader of the House of Lords in 2013. Between 2014 and 2016, Lord Hill was European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and the Capital Markets Union. In that role, he was in charge of the framework for regulating Europe’s financial services, for international regulatory co-operation, for the Banking Union and for taking forward work to strengthen the European Single Market for capital. Hill resigned as European Commissioner immediately after the 2016 Referendum and resumed his career in the private sector, advising a range of US and European businesses. He has been Lead NED at HM Treasury and carried out the UK Listings Review for the then Chancellor. Lord Hill holds an MA in History from Cambridge University.
